Cable Tray vs Cable Ladder vs Trunking: Which to Use

Trays, ladders and trunking each suit different cable loads and environments. A quick guide to choosing the right cable management.

Good cable management keeps an installation safe, ventilated and maintainable. The three most common systems suit different jobs.

Cable tray (perforated)

Perforated trays support light-to-medium cable bundles with good ventilation and easy access. They're the workhorse for most commercial and light-industrial runs.

Cable ladder

Ladders carry heavier power cables over longer support spans, with maximum airflow. They suit industrial power distribution and long horizontal or vertical runs.

Trunking

Enclosed trunking protects and conceals smaller cables — common for control wiring, data and surface runs in finished areas.

Choosing

  • Heavy power cables, long spans → ladder.
  • General mixed runs, good ventilation → perforated tray.
  • Protected, tidy runs for small/control cables → trunking.
  • Outdoor or corrosive areas → specify galvanizing or a suitable finish.

NIXCO manufactures trays, ladders, ducts and trunking to size, with the finish your environment needs.
