Structured Cabling: Cat6 vs Cat6A vs Fiber for Offices

The cabling you install now decides your network's life. How Cat6, Cat6A and fiber compare, and where each belongs.

Cabling outlives most other IT decisions — it's in the walls for a decade. Choosing well now saves an expensive re-pull later.

Cat6

Handles 1 Gbps comfortably and 10 Gbps only over short runs. Fine for a small office with modest needs and no major growth planned.

Cat6A

Supports 10 Gbps over the full 100-metre run with better shielding against interference and crosstalk. For most modern offices it's the sweet spot — future-proof, PoE-friendly and reasonably priced.

Fiber

Used for the backbone — linking floors, buildings and server rooms — and for high-bandwidth or long-distance links. It complements copper rather than replacing it at the desk.

A practical rule of thumb

  • Desks and access points → Cat6A (Cat6 only for small, static offices).
  • Backbone between floors/server rooms → fiber.
  • Always install to structured-cabling standards, with proper racks and patch panels.

NIXCO designs and installs structured and fiber cabling, racks and patch panels, then tests the network end to end.
