Sizing a Fire Pump System: The Basics

Why fire pump sets use electric, diesel and jockey pumps, and what information determines the flow and pressure your building needs.

A fire pump set provides the flow and pressure that hydrant and sprinkler systems rely on. Getting the duty right starts with the system it serves.

Why three pumps?

  • Jockey pump — maintains standby pressure so the system stays charged.
  • Main electric pump — delivers firefighting flow and pressure on demand.
  • Diesel pump — provides backup if electrical power fails.

What determines the duty?

Flow and pressure demand come from the hydrant and sprinkler design — the number of devices expected to operate, the building height, and the applicable design basis. Water storage is sized to sustain that demand for the required duration.
