Distribution Board Types Explained: MDB, SDB, Lighting & Power

MDB, SDB, power and lighting boards do different jobs in a building's distribution. Here's how they fit together and how to specify them.

"DB" covers a family of boards that split an incoming supply into protected final circuits. Knowing the types helps you specify the right ones.

Main Distribution Board (MDB)

The MDB takes the main incoming supply and distributes it to sub-boards and large loads, with the main protection and often metering.

Sub Distribution Board (SDB)

SDBs sit downstream of the MDB, feeding a floor, zone or department and dividing it into final circuits.

Power and lighting boards

  • Power distribution boards — feed socket and equipment circuits.
  • Lighting distribution boards — feed and control lighting circuits.
  • Both use MCB/MCCB/RCD protection selected to the circuits they serve.

Specifying a DB

You'll need the rated current, number of ways, protection devices, IP rating (indoor/outdoor) and mounting. NIXCO fabricates DB enclosures in-house to your way count and environment.
