UHF and VHF describe the frequency band a two-way radio uses — and it changes how well signals travel through buildings versus open ground.
VHF (very high frequency)
Longer wavelengths travel further over open, line-of-sight terrain — good for outdoor sites, fields and water with few obstructions.
UHF (ultra high frequency)
Shorter wavelengths penetrate buildings, walls and dense areas better — the usual choice for factories, malls, hotels and campuses.
Choosing
- Mostly indoors or built-up → UHF.
- Mostly outdoors and open → VHF.
- Large sites either way → add a repeater to extend coverage.
